HARTWELL TO SUPPLY NACELLE HOLD-OPEN RODS AND RATE CONTROL DEVICE ABOARD THE ARJ-21

PARIS AIR SHOW (June 18, 2007) — Leading latching system manufacturer Hartwell Corporation has announced today that it will be providing the hold-open rods and rate control device for GE CF34-10A engines destined for use aboard the ARJ-21. The prime contractor selected the company as a sub-contractor on the program late last year. Production units are scheduled for delivery during the first quarter of 2008.

The aft hold-open thrust rod assembly was based on Hartwell’s existing design currently in service on an existing military transport aircraft engine nacelle. The assembly is constructed primarily of nickel plated alloy steel and has a proven field record. The forward lightweight yet strong assembly is constructed of carbon composite and aluminum and also has a proven field record. The rate control device was developed specifically for the application. It uses the well known principals of viscous shear to provide the necessary damping loads and offers a very smooth and consistent damping load. It also keeps internal pressures to virtually zero allowing reliable sealing of fluid within the device. Although the design ensures no possible inadvertent release, it is exceptionally easy to operate and can be used during turnarounds for additional ventilation. The mechanism was designed using 3D-CAD modeling and in-house rapid prototyping to validate the design. In addition to solving all of the customer’s complex operational and safety requirements Hartwell’s design uses the optimum number of moving components.

Headquartered in Placentia, California, Hartwell Corporation is a member of the McKechnie Aerospace Structures Group. The company is an acknowledged leader in the design and manufacture of quick access latches, latching systems, and complex door and other assemblies for aircraft. In business for nearly 70 years, the company has developed many of the latches and latching systems in use today. Hartwell supports engine and airframe OEMs, as well as systems manufacturing with rapid response for prototypes and “first to market” concepts. Hartwell latches and latching systems can be found on virtually every platform flying in the western world today. Hartwell supports its customers with specialized manufacturing programs and customer logistics programs.
